        "content": "It shall be the duty of every mukaddam-\n(a) to control and superintend the village-patwari and village-watchmen; to report their deaths or\nabsence from duty; to maintain them in the possession of any lands appertaining to their office; to\nrecover and pay to them any cash allowances to which they may be entitled; and to take such steps as\nmay be necessary to compel them to perform their duties;\n(b) to furnish reports regarding the state of his village, at such places and times as the Deputy\nCommissioner fixes in this behalf;\n(c) to report and, if possible, to prevent encroachments on the public paths and roadways in his\nvillage;\n(d) to preserve such stations and marks erected in his village by Government-surveyors as may be\nmade over to his care;\n(e) subject to any rules issued by the Chief Commissioner, to keep his village in good sanitary\ncondition;\n(f) to report violations of any rules which the Chief Commissioner may make for the preservation\nof underwood, forests and trees growing on the village-lands, and for securing to persons entitled to cut\nwood and enjoy other privileges in the waste-lands of the village the rights to which they are entitled;\n(g) to collect, or aid in the collection of, all payments due to Government in his village;\n(h) to report all births and deaths taking place in his village.\n\nThe Chief Commissioner may make rules-\n(1) adding to the list of duties which a mukaddam is required to perform under this section; and\n(2) regulating the liability of persons residing in any village for charges necessarily incurred by\nmukaddams in the performance of the duties specified in clause (e) in respect of such village, and for\napportioning such charges among such persons; and\n(3) determining the officers to whom reports under this section shall be made.",
